MappingForRights Mapping Methodology: A New Approach to Participatory Mapping

MappingForRights is a new approach to participatory (or ‘community’) mapping. It has been developed by the Rainforest Foundation UK, (RFUK), on the back of 15 years’ experience of supporting indigenous and traditional communities of the Congo Basin rainforest in their efforts to fulfil their rights to land and livelihood.Building on growing support for participatory mapping in the Congo Basin, this brief guide combines RFUK’s 15 years’ experience of supporting local communities in the region to map their forest lands with some of the latest innovations in geo-spatial technologies. It is intended to provide practical guidance on ensuring community ‘ownership’ of the mapping process.MappingForRights is a new approach to participatory (or ‘community’) mapping.
