Protected Areas in the Congo Basin: Failing both People and Biodiversity?

This major research study based on a sample of 34 protected areas finds that conservation efforts in the region are falling well below expectations both in terms of respecting local peoples’ rights and conserving wildlife. It calls for a complete rethink of how forest protection is conceptualised and implemented, providing detailed recommendations for achieving sustainable conservation.

Study on the compatibility of CAR legislation with the provisions of ILO Convention 169 (in French)

Following the Central African Republic's (CAR) ratification of the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) Convention No. 169 on indigenous and tribal peoples in August 2010, the Rainforest Foundation UK in collaboration with the CAR High Commission on Human Rights and Good Governance, local NGOs, indigenous representatives and the ILO has produced a first study into the conformity of the CAR legislation with the convention. The study reviews all relevant national laws and makes specific recommendations on how best to harmonize CAR legislation and ILO C169.
